Charlie DeVore is a personal friend and a good friend of  Tech-Oil.  He is a truly gifted jazz cornetist with a long recording and  international performing career steeped in the traditions of authentic New Orleans Jazz.  In 1956, in New Orleans for duty with the U. S. Navy, Charlie rented a cornet from Werlein’s Music and studied under Professor Manual Manetta who had preformed with the legendary and unrecorded Buddy Bolden.  In the early 1960s he joined the famed Hall Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band and in 1966 the equally famed Emporium of Jazz in Mendota, MN became home for the band until 1991.  As Hall Brothers cornetist, Charlie also fronted the band with his good humor and his encyclopedic knowledge of  the history of New Orleans and traditional jazz.  Now active as leader of the Hall Brothers band when they perform, Charlie is also cornetist with the Bill Evans New Orleans Jazz Band which performs regularly.

Mr. DeVore, always modest about his own playing, has his own unique favorite trumpet and cornet players, a list that others might not choose. His top four are Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Bunk Johnson, and Kid Thomas Valentine.  http://www.docevans.com/charlie.htm  will elucidate this further.  Other favorites include Joe “King” Oliver, Tommy Ladnier, Mutt Carey, Percy Humphrey, Kid Punch Miller, George Mitchell, Lee Collins, Bobby Hackett, Red Allen, and Freddie Keppard.  The latter was a pre-Armstrong player as was Kid Thomas.  Charlie’s recordings are too many to name here but we are including an mp3 file of  "I've Got A Heart Full Of Rhythm", a Louis Armstrong/Horace Gerlach collaboration that he recorded with the Bill Evans Band.  If you get into Minneapolis and St. Paul,  and are looking for some great jazz featuring Charlie please email me and I will help out with schedule and directions.
